Service is doing something nice or helpful for someone else.

Summary:
The Bear family is challenged when Mama and Papa Bear notice that their kids have too much stuff. She is motivated to do something about it - others have so little and they have too much. The family teams up to sort everything. They have a garage sale and deliver the rest of their things to those in need in their community. On the way home, they all feel uplifted after a day of giving. 

Lesson Objectives: 

1. Students will be motivated to go through their things and donate what they can. 
2. Teachers can guide students in a discussion about service organizations in their community and why they are important. 

Guiding Questions: 

1. Mama Bear decides to ask her family to do a service project. What is it? 
2. The Bear kids challenge their dad to do what? 
3. Papa Bear challenges Mama Bear to do what? 
4. Have you ever had a garage sale at your house? If so, what was it like? 
5. The Bear family brings donations to different places. Where did they go?  
6. Have you ever participated in a service project, at the local food bank, or senior center, community garden or children’s hospital? If so, describe what it was like for you. 
7. Why do you think the Bear family was very happy after giving their stuff away?
8. What are some of the services for those in need in your community? If you don’t know, ask someone who does. 
9. Look around your house. Is there anything that no one uses anymore that you could donate? Make sure to ask your parents first! 
10. Service is performing acts of kindness that contribute to the well-being of others. Describe how the Bear family was able to offer service to their community.
