About the Story
The first thing Irving Berlin sees from the ship when he and his family arrive from Russia, is the Statue of Liberty, a powerful presence welcoming all to the U.S.A. with a vow to offer service and hope for a better life. Irving, gifted musically from childhood, declares, then and there, that he’ll write a song dedicated to that beautiful statue. After settling in New York City, Irving’s impoverished family struggles to survive. But not for long - when Irving Berlin’s musical talent is discovered, he becomes famous. His patriotic songs like “God Bless America” inspire the troops and American citizens during two world wars. He not only serves his country with his music - he donates millions to the Boy and Girl Scouts. Irving Berlin is a role model, an individual who valued America’s vow to serve the world, and a gifted songwriter and musician who brought inspiration to the world.
