Definition: A friend is someone you like spending time with because they make you feel happy and special, and help you when you need it.  In short: Build bonds that last forever. Summary: Lucy is a young bear who is super excited about making a new friend. She comes close to accomplishing her dream a few times but each effort ends in failure, until the very end of the story when she finally meets a stork who wants to be her friend. Making friends isn’t always easy, but if you try and don’t give up, it will happen.    Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students learn skills about making friends. The teacher guides them to talk about what might work and what usually doesn’t work. 
  Guiding Questions: 
  1. What was Lucy so excited about at the beginning of the story? 
  2. What happened when she started to play with the frog? 
  3. She climbed a tree so she could talk to the giraffe. Why was the giraffe upset? 
  4. Why did she wash the skunk? Did the skunk like that? 
  5. What happened when she tried to be friends with bees? 
  6. When Lucy demanded that the monkey be her friend did that work? 
  7. Does Lucy ever find a friend? 
  8. Did you ever try to be someone’s friend and it didn’t work out? What happened?
  9. What advice would you give someone who wanted to make a new friend? 
  10. Do you need some help making friends? Ask a family member or teacher to help you.
