About the Story
Unhei, newly arrived from Korea, faces some challenges on her first day of school in America. Insensitive kids on the bus make fun of her name, causing her embarrassment. Once she enters her classroom, she decides not to use her own name and doesn’t tell her classmates her Korean name. She tells them she will choose an American name. The next day at school her classmates give her a jar filled with names written on scraps of paper that she reads without choosing any of them. As the days go by and she continues to ponder possible American names, she meets a new friend, who surreptitiously helps her make the best choice.
