Summary:

Colonel Halversen, the “Chocolate Pilot,” participated in the Berlin Airlift in 1948. His nickname came from a service he provided for the children of this war-torn country - he dropped chocolate candies from his plane for kids who had been living in fear during the bombing raids. Mercedes was one of those children who was thrilled by this American pilot’s compassion and generosity. She began a correspondence with the Colonel and eventually met him when he visited Berlin. This true story is about compassion and friendship, a moving testament to the depth of the human heart. 

Lesson Objectives:

1. This lesson can be linked to a history lesson about the Berlin Airlift, a simplified version for 10 and 11 year olds.  
2. Teachers guide students in a discussion about what we can do to understand the suffering of others and help them. This lesson can lead into a class research project, choosing a cause and doing something to help others (service learning).
