Guiding Questions for Parents.

Definition of Cooperation for 4 - 7 year olds: Cooperation happens when two or more people help each other to make something good happen. It can also apply to animals or parts of a whole that need each other and work together.  An example of this is the human body – all the parts work together to make you healthy. In a nutshell: Together we can do more.  Summary: This beautifully illustrated poem is about the extensive variety of flowers that attract pollinators. Some are tubular, others have special colors and smells - they all are designed by nature to call bees, moths, butterflies, bats, to capture and spread their pollen.   Note to teachers: If students have not yet been introduced to pollination, briefly explain it. Flowers have two parts, a male part and a female part. Pollinators transfer pollen between these two parts which allows the plant to make seeds and reproduce. If we didn’t have flowers and pollinators, we wouldn’t be able to live on this planet.    Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students can recognize how different kinds of flowers attract different pollinators. 
  2. This book can be an introduction to a botany unit on reproduction through pollination.  
  Guiding Questions: 
  1. Why do you think the title of this book is “Flowers are Calling”?
  2. What are some of the animals that aren’t really interested in flowers? Why aren’t they interested? 
  3. What kind of flowers do hummingbirds like? 
  4. Why do some flowers have a sweet smell? 
  5. Can you name some flowers that have a sweet smell? 
  6. Have you seen a moth at night? What kind of flowers call them?  
  7. Ask someone to help you plant some flowers that are good pollinators. 
  8. Look outside and see what kind of flowers you can find? Do you see any that are in this story? 
  9. Why do you think there are so many different kinds of flowers? 
  10. Can you name some flowers and pollinators that go together?
