About the Story
Jane Addams was an American activist for social justice in the early 1900’s. The loss of her mother when she was a toddler, and a handicap that made her feel isolated and rejected, compelled her to sympathize with those who suffered. Her awareness of others living in impoverished conditions developed over time. In her childhood, she observed such families in her own town and this inspired her to promise she’d do something to help when she became an adult. After graduating from college, she traveled to Europe, saw all the usual sights, and one that was not a tourist destination - in London, England she visited a settlement house for struggling families. Back in the U.S.A. she transformed an old building into Hull House, a settlement house for anyone who needed help. Eventually, Jane became world famous and won the Nobel Prize, after some very challenging events. Why is the title “Dangerous Jane” when she doesn’t sound like a dangerous person? You’ll find out when you read the book!
