Summary:
This story is told in poetic form by a parent, grandparent, teacher, or any adult who loves a child and is imagining the life that he or she will live. One strong message is about each person’s uniqueness: there is only one you, and that means you are very special. The person telling the story doesn’t know “what wonderful things you will do,” and guesses that the child could do many different things, and be the kind of person who is kind, brave, and clever, someone with a big heart, someone wonderful.

1. Students will be motivated to think about what they can become and the kind of person they want to be as they grow up. 
2. This story will help kids feel good about themselves by  reminding them that they are special, and loved. Teachers can reinforce this message by using opportunities to give them this kind of encouragement.

2. Babies can’t do much except sleep, eat, and poop, and they can’t even talk. Why do you think parents love their babies so much? 
3. “This is the first time there’s ever been you.” Do you think there’s anyone who lived before you or is living now who is exactly like you? Why or why not? 
4. The author believes that you are one of a kind, that there is or never will be anyone just like you. Does that make you very special? Why or why not? 
5. Do you ever talk with the adults in your family about the wonderful things you will do? If so, what did you say? If not, talk to them about this. 
6. Do you make up stories or songs and share them with friends and family members? 
7. Do you like to help things grow or take care of animals?  
8. Have you ever read a story to younger children or adults? 
9. Do you think you’d like to be a mommy or daddy when you grow up? Why or why not?
