Before, During & After Reading

Guiding Questions for Parents

Definition:

to be amazed at and/or curious about something that is pleasantly unexpected, beautiful, or  mysterious.

In short:

Curiosity sparks endless discovery.

Summary:
This book is full of clever ideas about how to explore and develop the “gift” of curiosity. First of all, we’re born to be curious!  We have an innate desire to learn new things. The authors invite us to ask lots of questions, like who, what, when, where, why, and how? Why? Because when we learn to ask the right questions it helps us discover more about people, places, and things. Curiosity also helps us show people that we care. Teachers can copy the special curiosity badge at the end of the book for a class activity. Students decorate their badge, and wear it to help them remember to be curious!

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students memorize the list of question words: who, what, when, where, why, and how. They play a curiosity game to practice using these words. Note to teachers: See the curiosity activity on the website under “Wonder.”

Guiding Questions:

  1. Can you explain what the word “curiosity” means?
  2. What are some of the things babies do that show they are naturally curious?
  3. We use our 5 senses to learn about the world around us. Can you name all 5 senses?
  4. What are some of the question words you can use when you want to find out more about something?
  5. Let’s say someone you care about seems sad. What kind of question could you ask them to show you care and you want to help?
  6. Name two things you’d like to learn to do and why is it important to you?
  7. Ask your parents how curiosity helps them do the work they do.
  8. What’s one new thing you learned to do this year? Was it hard or easy to learn? If it was hard, what helped you make it happen?
  9. Can you make your bed, tie your shoes, brush your teeth, put away your toys, do chores around the house?
  10. “Curious George” is a series of books about a monkey whose curiosity does get him into trouble at times. Do you think that sometimes curiosity can get you into trouble? How?
