Definition:

Courage is the willingness to go beyond fear to face a healthy (not foolish) challenge, even though it  could be painful, risky, or end in failure.  

In short:

Do good, try hard even when it’s scary.

Summary:
Susan B. Anthony was an American activist in the early 1800’s. She was a suffragist, supporting women’s right to vote, and an abolitionist, actively working to end slavery. This book tells the story of her involvement in the fight for equal rights. She worked diligently and courageously, urging her followers to never give up on their cause. 

Lesson Objectives: 

1. This story can be linked to history lessons about civil rights, especially women’s rights,  in the U.S.A. (1800’s)
2. Students discuss Susan B. Anthony’s activism, what she had to do to promote her cause, why it was important, and how she showed courage in her quest to make life better for women.

4. “Unless women could vote, own property, and be full citizens, they’d never have power over their own lives.” Why do you think these rights are important?
5. What did Susan do to let people know about women’s rights and ending slavery? 
6. A person who is willing to face a challenge is courageous.  How did Susan show courage in the way she lived her life? 
7. Susan got arrested for trying to vote. Do you think that was fair? Why or why not?
