Summary:
To love means to be responsible and take positive action towards others and nature. This book illustrates some of the many opportunities to express love. Sometimes it’s just giving a hug, planting a tree, letting someone have the last cookie, or holding your sister’s hand. Love means showing you care by being responsible. 

Lesson Objectives: 

  1. Students connect the word “responsible” to the word “love”, and they learn some new ways from the examples in this book to show they care 

Guiding Questions: 

  1. What does the word “responsible” mean to you? Can you give an example? 
  2. What does the word “love” mean to you? Can you give an example of showing love to someone or something? 
  3. Do you think saying “thank you” to someone who gives you a gift is just something you have to do, or is it a way to show that you care? Can you explain your answer? 
  4. Does it feel better when you do something for someone else because it’s what you should do, or when you do something because it’s something you want to do? 
  5. How do you feel when someone reaches out to you and helps you when you’re in trouble? Share about a time when that happened. 
  6. The next time you get the opportunity, hold the door open for someone else. How did it feel to do that and how did the other person react? 
  7. Make a card for your grandma, grandpa, or someone in your family and thank them for something they did for you. 
  8. Offer to help a family member make a meal.
  9. Do something nice for someone who is younger than you.
  10. Ask a parent or grandparent what they think the words “love” and “responsibility” mean. Ask them to share some examples from their own experience. How do they like to show love? What are some of their responsibilities and how do they like being responsible?
