Definition:

Courage is being willing to face something hard or scary, like trying to do something you’ve never done before.

Do good, try hard even when it’s scary.

Summary:
A young bird contemplates leaving the nest but hesitates because flying is scary. What will happen if the bird  tries, and what will happen if it doesn’t try? The bird ponders the pros and cons until finally it courageously decides to take a chance! 

Lesson Objectives: 

  1. This story can be linked to a science unit on birds, with a focus on species found in the child’s environment. 
  2. The teacher leads a discussion on growth, how we humans go through learning and growing phases just like the bird in this story, emphasizing that sometimes it can be scary. 

Guiding Questions: 

  1. What does the phrase “never forever endeavor” mean?
  2. The main character in this story is struggling with something. What is it? 
  3. The bird tries to convince itself to try to fly. Have you ever tried to convince yourself to do something difficult or scary? What did you tell yourself?   
  4. What are some of the reasons the bird gives for not trying to fly?  
  5. “If I don’t try I won’t…”    Complete the sentence. 
  6. “Look at me, I’m….” Complete the sentence.
  7. Have you ever seen a baby trying to walk or feed himself?  Describe what you saw. 
  8. Do you remember when you first tried to tie your shoes, ride a bike, or write your name? What was it like? 
  9. What if the birds just stayed in their nests? What would happen to them? 
  10. What are some of the difficult things you’ve done, and are you glad you tried to do them?
