In short:

Do what needs to be done.

Summary:
In Africa, the honeyguide and the honey badger work together to harvest their favorite food - you guessed it, honey! Usually this is a fair arrangement, each animal responsible for their contribution. But one day, honey badger gobbles up all the honey, leaving none for his partner. Honey badger suffers consequences for his greediness when he is tricked into a scary encounter - lesson learned, don’t shirk your responsibility or you’ll get in big trouble!

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students are able to understand and link the words “responsibility” and “consequence” as they follow the actions in the story with the teacher. Note to teachers: as you read the story, ask students to make up actions that go with the words, especially when the honey badger and the honeyguide search for honey.

Guiding Questions:

  1. How do the honeyguide and honey badger help one another?
  2. What did the honey badger do one day to upset the honeyguide?
  3. Honeyguide tricks honey badger - why does she trick him?
  4. Can you name three animals that live where honeyguide and honey badger live?
  5. Consequence is a big word - can you say it with me? What do you think it means?
  6. The honeyguide and honey badger have a responsibility to one another. When the honey badger didn’t do his part, what were the consequences?
  7. Make up some actions for these words: “pitter patter”; “splish splash”; “boom boom”; “Clickety click”; “swish, swish” - ask an adult to read through the story with you as you do the actions that go with these words.
  8. Make up sounds for these words: squeaked, squealed, bellowed, piped, trumpeted, whooped, and snorted.
  9. What’s something your parents can’t do unless you help them do it?
  10. Ask your parents how they helped around the house when they were kids. What were their chores and do they think it was good that they helped their family?
