Guiding Questions for Parents

Definition:
Integrity means being honest, and responsible and respectful all the time, whether or not people can see what you’re doing.

In short:

Do the right thing, even when no one's looking.

Summary:
Five year old Tommy looks up to his older brother, Nao, who is a good role model. Nao reminds Tommy that “lying is not cool…once you lie you lose trust and you’ll be believed no more.” One morning Tommy observes Nao as he makes a mess, admits that it was his fault, apologizes to his mom, and cleans it up. Nao admits to Tommy that sometimes it’s hard to tell the truth but it’s always the best choice because if you don’t, you’ll hurt your relationships. The two brothers invent a way to remind each other to tell the truth - they make a “T” sign for “Truth.” This helps Tommy develop the habit of honesty.

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students discuss how dishonesty affects relationships and destroys trust while honesty does just the opposite. This is a very good reason to always tell the truth.

Guiding Questions:

  1. Why does Tommy look up to his older brother Nao?
  2. When Tommy lied to Nao, what did Nao tell him?
  3. Did Nao believe Tommy when he said he lost the key to his treasure box? Why or why not?
  4. How did Nao handle it when he made a mess in the kitchen?  Did he admit it?  Did he clean it up or leave it for his mom to clean up?
  5. Did Nao’s mom scold him for making a mess? Why or why not?
  6. Show the sign that Nao and Tommy made up to remind themselves to tell the truth. Share it with your family members, explain what it’s for and why it’s important to tell the truth.
  7. If you’re tempted to tell a lie, use the sign as a reminder to tell the truth. Or make up one of your own!
  8. Do you think that people will still trust you if you lie?
  9. Will it make a difference if you admit you told a lie and apologize? Why or why not?
  10. Why do you think it helps people trust you when you are always honest?
🌿   Virtue Connection: Integrity means doing what is right even when no one is watching.
