Definition: to be amazed at and/or curious about something that is pleasantly unexpected, beautiful, or mysterious. In short: Curiosity sparks endless discovery.
Summary: A polar bear lives at the top of the world, surrounded by white snow and ice. One day when he’s feeling disgruntled by the colorless world in which he lives, the bear receives a letter with a drawing of a rainbow and this fills him with a longing to experience the beautiful colors in the picture. Soon, the girl who sent the letter comes to visit and they go on a journey together to explore the world of color and beauty. As they visit the wonders of the world, they paint pictures of each place and send them to Bear’s friends back home. Bear returns to find that his friends have displayed the pictures he had sent them. Most importantly, Bear discovers that he has now learned to see colors in the sky and all around him because he knows how to look for them. Lesson Objectives:

Students gain more awareness of and appreciation for the colorful world around them.
They become more curious about some of the “wonders” on the pages of this book, like the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, and the Statue of Liberty.

Do you know why the place where Bear lives is full of snow and ice and very cold?
What does Bear want to do after he receives the picture of the rainbow?
Do you recognize any of the places Bear and the girl visit?
As they travel, Bear and the girl draw and color pictures of what they see. What do they do with their artwork?
When Bear and the girl go back, his friends have done something nice for him. What did they do?
What did Bear learn as a result of his travels?
Do you have a favorite color? What is it and why do you like it?
As you read the story you saw pictures of the places they went. Pick one place that is illustrated in the book and find out more about it.
What does it mean to you when, at the end of the story, Bear learned how to look for the colors around him? Why do you think he couldn’t see them before?
