Guiding Questions for Parents

Definition:

Integrity is the practice of living consistently by a code of strong moral principles which includes being honest, respectful and responsible all the time, whether you’re seen or unseen.

In short:

Do the right thing, even when no one's looking.

Summary:
Readers take a journey into the imagination of Eli, a boy who loves airplanes and dreams of flying planes and spaceships some day. His exciting dreams are interrupted with the arrival of a Lie-O-Meter that records lies and deals out tickets when there’s a lie. Eli is faced with the challenge of reality - facing and dealing with too many lies. Get-out-of-trouble fibs and stretch-the-truth lies decline as Eli learns the value of telling the truth.

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students are more inclined to tell the truth as they learn from Eli how lies just get them into more trouble.
  2. Teachers can reinforce the lesson by posting a classroom sign: “Honesty is always the best policy,” and talking about it frequently over the course of the school year.

Guiding Questions:

  1. Eli loves to journey into his imagination because there he can do everything he loves to do. Share about your imagination, and where it leads you.
  2. What does the Lie-O-Meter do?
  3. What’s a consequence and what were some of the consequences that Eli experienced?
  4. What happened when Eli told a keep-me-out-of trouble lie?
  5. Why did he decide to tell the truth about the broken lamp?
  6. What does this mean to you: “honesty is always the best policy”?
  7. Would you choose to be friends with someone who lies all the time? Why or why not?
  8. How would you handle it if you knew a friend or family member was lying? Would you speak to them directly or would you find someone trustworthy and tell them?
  9. Did you ever blame someone else for something you did? What happened?
  10. Do you think anyone will ever invent a real Lie-O-Meter? Why or why not?
🌿   Virtue Connection: Integrity means doing what is right even when no one is watching.
