Definition: Courage is being willing to face something hard or scary, like trying to do something you’ve never done before.  In short: Do good, try hard even when it’s scary. Summary: This book is part of a how-to series about virtues, and this one is about courage. Every page has a “courage card” with a sentence about an action of bravery. Clever illustrations and examples accompany the courage cards, providing lots of ideas for what students can do to grow their courage.    Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students copy the courage cards into journal pages, one card/page. They are directed to pick one each day, try to do it, and write and/or draw about their experience. 
  Guiding Questions: 
  1. What does the “Courage Spot” say to introduce itself on the first page of the book? 
  2. What is the purpose of the “courage cards’? 
  3. On the inside, we may be worried or frustrated when faced with a challenge. How does courage help us with that? 
  4. The more you believe in yourself, the easier it will become to show ____________. Fill in the blank and memorize. 
  5. If someone tries to get you to laugh at someone who falls, what can you do that takes courage? 
  6. If a new kid comes into your class, what’s something courageous you could do that would help that student feel welcome? 
  7. When you don’t understand something, and it’s hard to ask for help, what courageous action can you take? 
  8. Did you ever have the courage to try a new food? What was it and what happened? 
  9. Share about a time when you were afraid but you managed to be brave even though it was scary. 
  10. What act of courage will you do today?
