What is Courage?

Activity: Students listen to the video about courage. They hear about what it is and how to recognize the different voices of courage. Students talk about their own struggles of being afraid or nervous, and how it’s difficult sometimes to choose to do the right thing.

 

Materials needed: the video

 

Directions: Explain: “Today we will listen to a video about courage, what it is and how to recognize the different ‘voices’ of courage. Courage is something we all innately have, but sometimes it’s difficult to find it. We need to know what to do when we feel afraid or nervous. We also need to learn how to be willing to have the courage to do the right thing. After watching the video, we'll talk about your experiences with this, and try to learn from and help one another.” Show the video, and lead a discussion about it using the following guiding questions:

  • Share about the “bold lion voice of courage”, what is it, and when might we use it?

  • Share about the “gentle mouse voice” -  in what kinds of situations might we use it?

  • Can you be afraid of something and have courage at the same time? Can you give an example of this from your own experience?

  • Can you give an example of having courage to do the right thing?

  • “You must have courage to choose love over hate and anger.” Can you give an example of what this means? 




 

Wrap it up: Explain: “It’s important to find the help you need to deal with your fears and frustrations. Be a good friend when someone asks for help, and when you need support, ask someone you trust. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, older brothers and sisters, teachers, coaches, and people in our community will be very willing to help. There’s always something that can be done. Please remember to be respectful and caring when someone is struggling with fear. There may be a time when you will need the kind support of another.”
