Activity: Students watch the resource video:“We All Have Rights,” which is based on information from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The characters Viz, Leepa and their pet Zooko go on a treasure hunt for child rights. Students learn that the letters UNICEF stand for the words: United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, shortened to United Nations Children’s Fund. After watching the video, students are informed that not all children have equal rights: some don’t have access to clean water or nutritious food; in some places girls aren’t allowed to attend school, or there is no school at all; in other places children have to work instead of going to school, even very young children. Students learn that UNICEF collects money to provide funds for these underserved children. They brainstorm a service project to raise money and make a class contribution to UNICEF or a local service organization that helps children.
Materials needed: the video; a letter to send to parents about the fundraiser (students may want to do a number of bake sales to raise money and parents can contribute items); a contact from UNICEF, especially someone who visits the class and explains the goals of this organization or a representative from a local service agency for children
