Thank You Body, Thank You Heart

Pre-K & Kindergarten

Activity: Gratitude, Levels Pre-K, K   Resource: Thank You Body, Thank You Heart - by Jennifer Cohen Harper. Illustrated by Karen Gilmour   Activity: Students listen and follow the video. They respond to each prompt while standing and making up actions to go with the words.    Materials needed: the video; space for students to stand and move according to the prompts on the video   Directions: Explain that students will watch the video and pause at the end of each page to make up an action that goes with the words. Give an example. Choose a page like the one in which the feet and legs are thanked. Ask students to make up an action that could go with that page, such as jumping up and down three times while chanting three times:  “thank you feet and hands”! Go through the book, create actions that go with the words, and say thank you for the body part that is highlighted on each page.  Do it more than once so students can remember some of the words and actions.    Wrap it up: Explain: “It’s fun to thank our whole body and all its parts at the end of everyday like they did in the story. Today we practiced motions that go with the story. Try to remember to thank all the parts of your body before you go to sleep tonight,  just like the mother-daughter pair did in the video. See if you can get a family member to do it with you!”
