Materials needed: a space big enough for students to move around, preferably a gymnasium or outdoor play yardDirections: Introduce the activity, “Simon Says”. Explain that this is a game that has a lesson to learn about following directions. Arrange students on a horizontal line facing you. You are Simon. Start giving directions, one at a time, such as, “Take 3 giant steps forward” and “tiptoe 10 steps backward”. After playing the game, lead a discussion. Ask, “Was it hard to follow Simon’s directions sometimes? Did you have to pay attention? Did you forget what Simon said to do or did you remember each time?” Wrap it up: Reinforce the lesson with some encouraging words, “I like the way you all listened so carefully to Simon! It feels good to follow directions, doesn’t it? Let’s think about this game when we’re given a direction to do something - let’s listen carefully, and do what we’re being asked to do.”
