Activity: Students learn about the importance of respecting materials and tools as they practice correct use of scissors. Materials needed: the resource story; scissors, rulers, markers,and paper (could be scrap paper or newspaper)Directions: Show the resource video. Explain: “I’m showing you this video because I want you to know about showing respect for our school materials and tools. Everything needs to be treated properly so that our things last and can be used over and over again. When we’re able to do this, we show respect for our things, in this case, scissors.” Show the video again, and go over each point about correct use of scissors. Demonstrate, then guide students to practice carrying scissors properly. Show them how to put scissors away, how to open and close them after use. Pass out paper, one per student, and tell them to make a straight line with a marker on the paper from top to bottom. Ask them to try to tear it evenly without scissors. Repeat this with new pieces of paper, and tell them to use the scissors. Discuss the results. Have fun with this activity! Wrap it up: Explain: “Today we practiced the correct use and care of scissors, one of our very helpful classroom tools. Thank you for participating in our activity. I hope our scissors will last a long, long time!”
