Activity: Listen to the video and practice saying sorry and taking turns

Materials needed: the resource video

Directions: Explain: “Having good manners means that we are able to apologize when we bother or hurt someone, either accidentally or on purpose. Can you think of somethings that people do or say that they should apologize for? [wait for responses] Sometimes we bump into someone, spill a drink, or break something without meaning to, and these are accidents. It helps to say ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to’, when that happens, and we can help clean up a mess, or offer someone a hand if they fall down. If we hurt someone on purpose, we need to apologize, even though it might be hard to do so if the other person hurt us first. If that happens, we can use our words instead of our bodies to show we need to be respected.  If the other person didn’t do anything to us, and we hurt them on purpose, we really need to apologize and do something to make up for our mistake. The video also let us know that we can avoid hurting someone else by remembering to take turns. Can you think of times when you have to take turns? Is it hard? [wait for responses].” Tell children to repeat after you, so that they can practice: “I’m sorry” and “Can you forgive me?”

Wrap it up:  Explain: “Today we talked about good manners, especially saying sorry and asking someone to forgive us. We also talked about taking turns. When a person has good manners, they are being respectful. I like to be around people who have good manners, because I like to be respected, how about you?”
