Positive Self-Reflection journal writing

5th & 6th Grade

Materials needed: a chart to display in the classroom that has a list of prompts; a journal for each student

List of prompts and directions: Think about your day today and respond to the prompts assigned by your teacher.

What positive choices did you make?

Which of your strengths did you use?

What challenges did you overcome?

Did you make someone feel good about themselves?

Did you make a contribution toward a better world, happier, more caring, safer?

What puts a smile on your face when you think back on your day?

What did you accomplish?

Did you have an opportunity to show kindness to someone?

What was the best part of your day?

Did you use positive self-talk? If so, describe what you said to yourself that was positive.

Did your best self show up today? If not, what could you do tomorrow to make that happen?

Directions: Guide students in a discussion about self-reflection and why it’s an important skill to learn. Explain that they will practice a specific kind of self-reflection that will help them develop confidence, self-esteem, and gratitude - it’s called Positive Self-Reflection. Provide them with the list of prompts and go over what each one means, asking students to share examples. The purpose of the prompts is to help them see their strengths and positive actions. At the end of each day, choose two prompts and give students 5-10 minutes to reflect on the positive aspects of their day by writing a response in a journal. After doing this activity for 2 weeks, guide a discussion on this exercise, asking students to read some of their responses to the class.

Wrap it up: Explain: “When we can reflect on the positive parts of ourselves and our day, we can feel better about our own abilities and specialness. Every day, there are opportunities to make good choices that make us feel happy. But at the end of each day, we don’t always remember all the good things that happened. In fact, we tend to remember all our mistakes and the bad things that happened. This exercise is all about helping you to discover your own specialness, the wonderful unique you that is there but maybe goes unnoticed until you take a closer look!”
