Make New Friends with these 5 Easy Steps

Activity #1: Students listen to the video and discuss the 5 easy steps to make new friends. 

 

Materials needed:

Directions: Explain: “Today’s activity is about making friends. I will show you a video that explains 5 steps on making and keeping friends. After that, we’ll talk about those steps.” Show the video and talk about the 5 steps that are displayed on the chart. Call on students to (a) explain in their own words what each step means to them, and (b) give examples from their own experiences

 

Activity #2: Video Lesson - Friendship Soup Recipe: A NED Short (youtube.com)

 

Materials needed: a soup pot with a sign on it - “Friendship soup”, other decorative materials that can represent ingredients for the soup (refer to what they used in the video), a chart on which to write the ingredients for the soup

 

Directions: Preview the video before doing this activity. Explain that you would like to make something called “Friendship Soup” with the class. Bring out the labeled pot. Ask students to suggest ingredients that they would add to the soup. Use materials that represent the different ingredients students suggest. Make a list of their ingredients. Ask: “Would you like to see what ingredients other students used for their “Friendship Soup”? Show the video entitled “Friendship Soup.” Write any ingredients that weren’t included in the class list of ingredients on the class “Friendship Soup” recipe. Keep the list posted and refer to it as a reminder for the students. 

 

Wrap it up: Explain: “Friendship is all about developing the courage and skills to reach out to others. Sometimes we have been hurt by a friendship that didn’t work out the way we wanted it to, and we are afraid or reluctant to try to make a new friend. But it’s very important to keep trying and to practice the skills in the video, like active listening and empathy.” Follow up with occasional meetings (in small groups, if possible) with students in which they can talk honestly about their relationships. You can guide them through their challenges and help students to sort out problems they may have with others.
