1st & 2nd Grade

Open External Resource →
Activity: Students listen to the video and discuss the importance of learning how to make new friends. They are invited to learn the lyrics of the hip-hop version, sing along, and create dance moves to go with the rhythm and words.

Materials needed: the video; space for students to dance to the music

Directions: Explain: “You may be familiar with this song, but you may not have heard the hip-hop version of it. We will listen to it first, and the second time through, try to sing along, and think about some dance moves that go with the lyrics. I’ll have you demonstrate your ideas, and then we’ll work on creating a hip-hop dance to go with the song.” Show the video and discuss its content. Ask: (1) why they think friendship is important; (2) what are some things they can do to make new friends; (3) why it’s difficult sometimes to “make new friends”; and (4) why it’s hard to “keep the old.”

Wrap it up: Explain that making friends is important - it’s something they will be doing all their lives so it’s worth spending time learning more about how to build and keep friendships. Tell them that if they need someone to talk to about this, you would be happy to help. They can come to you and you will help them talk about what’s going on. Play the video occasionally and help students to learn the hip-hop dance and song.
