Directions: Explain: “Today’s activity is about the word ‘integrity.’ Integrity means being honest, and responsible and respectful all the time, whether or not people can see what you’re doing. It also means that if you see something that is wrong, you are willing to try to help. Let’s say you and a friend are playing on the playground. A bully comes along and makes fun of your friend. You ask the bully to stop. That person may or may not listen to what you say, but at least you try to help. If the bully doesn’t stop, you can go ask the teacher for help. I want to introduce you to a fun way of understanding what I’m talking about, a game called ‘Integrity Freeze Tag’.”
Directions for “Integrity Freeze Tag” - Create a space with boundaries for the game. Form two teams, and identify the teams with different colored t-shirts (a light colored t-shirt team and a dark-colored t-shirt team) or pinafores. Tell the teams to line up facing each other about 10 feet apart. Appoint a “tagger” in each team. Explain that when you give the signal, everyone scatters while the taggers try to tag-freeze members on the opposite team. As everyone tries to escape the taggers, they also try to free their members by unfreezing them with a tag. When a frozen student is tagged by someone on their team, they are free once again to run out of the way of the tagger from the opposite team. When the whistle blows, the team that has the least number of frozen members wins.
Wrap it up: Conclude with a discussion about the game. Ask questions: (1) Who among you got frozen? (2) Who got unfrozen by your team member? (3) Who unfroze a team member? (4) How did it feel to get unfrozen? (5) How did it feel to unfreeze your team member? Guide students to understand how this activity relates to the word “integrity.” Explain: “Do you remember the example I gave about a student who was bullied, then defended by a friend who told the bully to stop? In the game, some of you were able to rescue your teammates by taking a risk - you risked getting caught in the process of trying to unfreeze them. The important lesson is that you were willing to try to help your teammates out of the dilemma of being frozen. You showed integrity by trying to help your team members. Next time you see someone who needs help on the playground or anywhere, remember how good it felt to help someone get unfrozen, or to receive help from your teammate when you were frozen! Acting with integrity feels good because it is the right thing to do! ”
