Activity: Students review the meaning of the virtue “hope,” and listen to a video about what to do when they become discouraged. After the video they discuss the examples that show how to change our thinking from being discouraged to seeing a brighter side of the problem.
Materials needed: the video
Directions: Ask: “What does it mean to have hope?” Listen to student responses, then guide them with open-ended questions to the definition: to hope means dreaming big and taking healthy risks, believing that things will work out for the best in spite of challenges along the way. With hope, we have a vision for the future that strengthens our willingness to take risks in order to achieve that vision. Explain: “We all want to be hopeful, but sometimes things get in the way. I will show you a video about what you can do when you get discouraged.” Show the video and discuss the examples. Lead students in a practice of saying, “I can handle it!”
Wrap it up: Explain: The video showed how a boy was able to successfully deal with unexpected disappointments. He forced himself to think about alternative ways to handle the problem, instead of focusing on his feelings of frustration. In this way, he became confident about handling the difficult things that come up everyday. He concentrated on becoming more hopeful and positive rather than giving into his feelings of frustration. Would you like to have a friend like that who could remind you to be hopeful?
