Gratitude Drama

3rd & 4th Grade

Materials needed: small pieces of paper and pencils, a bowl

Activity: The teacher writes out words and phrases that are typical things and experiences for which kids their age can be grateful. Here are some ideas: someone opens a door for you, picks you up after you fall down, offers to share their lunch with you, cooks your dinner, drives you to school and other places, invites you to play with them, etc. If you need ideas, brainstorm with your students and use their ideas!

Directions: Begin the lesson by explaining that acts of kindness make others feel grateful and happy. Divide the class into small teams of 2 or 3 students, and say: “Today you’re going to all be actors! We will divide into teams and play a game called Kindness and Gratitude drama. A team will choose a piece of paper that has some words on it. They will act out what it says on the paper and everyone will guess what act of kindness they’re doing. Each team will get at least one chance to act. If you need any help getting started with your acting, quietly tell me and I’ll give you some ideas! “ After all the teams have acted, lead a discussion on the importance of both doing acts of kindness, and expressing gratitude when someone does an act of kindness for you.

Wrap it up: “Thank you actors - you all did a great job! Let’s remember two things from today’s lesson - what do you think they are?” Prompt if needed: (1) do acts of kindness, (2) thank others when they do an act of kindness for you.
