Good People Everywhere

1st & 2nd Grade

Activity: Gratitude, Levels 1, 2   Resource: Good People Everywhere (Read Aloud)   Activity: Students are guided to contribute ideas to a class list of good people who are helping others in their community. The teacher makes a chart and writes student’s ideas on the chart. The class chooses a couple of people on the list and the teacher finds someone who can come and share with the class why they enjoy doing what they’re doing for the community.    Materials needed: the video; chart paper and a place to display it; materials for making thank you cards   Directions: Show the video. Arrange students so they can see the chart. Explain that the class will brainstorm about good people in their community and write down what they do. If they know the name of the person and what they do, write that down. If they don’t know the name of the person but they do recognize the kind of work they do, write that down and why it’s important. The class chooses a couple of names on the list and the teacher arranges for a person to come and talk about their contribution, especially why it’s important to them and to the community.    Wrap it up: Explain that it’s important to recognize and thank the people who are doing good things in the community. Say: “We chose a couple of names from our list and I will contact them to come and tell you why they do the good things they do. Let’s welcome them and thank them. We will write thank you cards in advance and give them the cards when they come to share their story with us.”
