Explain: “We’ve been talking about courage and what it’s like to go beyond fear of getting hurt or experiencing something that is painful and scary. People who can’t see, hear, or walk or have some other problem like that need a special kind of courage to face life’s challenges every single day. We will make a list of your ideas about where or how to find an adult like that and invite them to visit our classroom. After that we’ll make a list of interview questions to use when they come, and write thank you letters afterwards. Let’s get started brainstorming about who to invite.” Arrange for a guest to visit the class and prep them. On the day of the visit, students interview the guest. After the visit, students write thank you letters to the guest. Invite more speakers if possible, and follow the same procedure.
Wrap it up: Explain: “We’ve learned that some people have special challenges in life that require a lot of courage every single day. They are people just like you and me, and have the same wishes to live a happy life, but they also have some disadvantages that make it more difficult to do that. We can have a lot of respect for how strong and courageous they are and can learn from their example about how to face our own fears.”
