Activity: Students listen to the resource book and discuss different types of community helpers. They are guided in a discussion about what would happen if their community did not have each of these helpers. With the help of their teacher, they choose a superhero community helper and ask them to visit the classroom so students can learn about the work they do and how they feel about it. Before the visit, students make a list of questions for the presenter, and create thank you cards for the individual or group.

Directions: Explain that the activity is about community superheroes who help us stay healthy, happy, safe, and connected in our neighborhood. Ask students to name some of these helpers and tell what they do and why it’s important. Show the resource video. Lead a discussion about what would happen if each of these helpers were not around to serve the community. Examples: (1) what if there was no garbage collection because no one wanted to do the job? What would your community look and smell like? (2) what if no one wanted to go to school and teach you? (3) what if there was a fire but no firefighters or equipment to put it out? Tell students that you’d like to invite a community superhero to talk to the class and ask for their suggestions - perhaps there’s a superhero parent in the group. Select and contact a presenter(s), guide students to make thank you cards for them, brainstorm a list of questions to ask the presenter,and schedule a visit.
Wrap it up: Explain that the purpose of this lesson is to learn about the services with which we are provided and why it’s so important to appreciate the people who provide them. “Why do they do what they do? Because they want to help others. We are lucky to have these services and someday we might want to become a community superhero! We can practice at home by helping our family members and neighbors.”
