Community Service

Activity: Students watch the video about community service. The teacher and students identify a service that can be done at school, something that they’re not already doing. They are given materials and instructions about the task, and after it’s completed, they discuss how they felt about helping out. 

 

Materials needed:

  2. If the service involves cleaning, provide appropriate cleaning materials that are safe for kids this age to use

  3. If the service involves making a thank you card, provide materials for card-making




 

Directions: Introduce the activity with a question: “Do you like to help other people? What kinds of things do you like to do for your family, friends, people in your community?” Show them the video and guide them to understand that there are simple ways of helping we can do everyday and anywhere. Give them some examples, and ask them to add their ideas to the list. Display the list - during the school year, revisit this exercise and keep adding new ideas.

  • Offering a seat next to you and saying, “would you like to sit here?”

  • Making a card for someone who is sick, or anyone who could use a little extra love

Have in mind a doable service project that can be done at school, but first ask students for their ideas. Choose a service project,  give students directions and materials, and talk about it afterwards -  ask them about their experience.

Wrap it up:  “People like it when we show them we care, and we get something out of giving, don’t we? It makes us feel good when we can help someone! I will display this list of service ideas and add your suggestions. We’ll choose other projects to do once a month.
