Activity: Students are introduced to the theme of service and the joy of giving as they learn a new song from the resource video. They practice the song and adopt this line as a class motto: “If everyone helps each other, we’re stronger when we’re together.” This is a fun way of learning about some typical community helpers and an opportunity for students to find out more about those who make lives healthy and safe.

Materials needed: the resource video

Directions: Introduce the topic with a question: “who helps us in our community, what do they do to help?” Explain that today they will learn a song about some of the helpers in our community. Show the video and ask the students to brainstorm with you about actions (make it simple) to go with the song. Practice the actions and the song.

Wrap it up: Explain: “It’s important to recognize all those who make our communities safe and healthy. These helpers go to work everyday to take care of everyone in our community. Maybe when you grow up you will be doing some of the jobs we talked about today. Let’s remember to thank our community helpers whenever we can! “
