Choose a Gratitude

3rd & 4th Grade

Materials: depending on how many players, a medium size opaque bag for for every 4-5 players;  5 different colors of crayons in each bag, one of each - red, blue, yellow, purple, green; a chart that identifies areas of gratitude and a matching color (see below)

Directions: Tell students that today’s lesson is about gratitude. Show students the chart and guide a brief discussion about different types of gratitudes. Divide students in groups of 4 or 5 and station them at different tables. On each table is a bag with 5 different crayon colors, the ones listed on the chart. Students may not look inside the bag. Demonstrate how to pick a color out of a bag without looking, find the matching gratitude on the chart, and respond with a personal gratitude that matches the color. Direct the groups to take turns picking a color (create a system for ordering who goes first, next, etc). Each person has 30 seconds or so to pick a color, name a personal gratitude that matches the color, and return the crayon to the bag. The teacher uses a bell or something to signal when it’s the next person’s turn. Explain that if they choose the same color twice, put it back, and select another until they get a new color. At the end of the activity, each student should have selected all 5 colors. Select a few students to share about their experience, and conclude by thanking everyone for participating. Optional extension: Tell students to draw a picture of one of their gratitudes. 

 

Wrap it up: Explain that the purpose of today’s lesson is to help us remember all the good experiences we have for which we can be grateful. For homework, tell the person you mentioned for whom you are grateful, that you appreciate them for whatever they’ve done to make you feel happy.  And do it today!
