Beach Ball Gratitude

1st & 2nd Grade

Materials needed: a large blown-up beach ball with gratitude prompts written by the teacher, music, space to create a large circle

Suggestions for Gratitude prompts to write on the beach ball: (1) name a place that makes you happy, (2) name a person for whom you felt grateful, (3) what’s an experience for which you are grateful? (4) what’s an act of kindness you can do today?

Activity:  Explain that today students will play Beach Ball Gratitude. Show them the beachball and tell them to think ahead about answers to each of the gratitude prompts. Guide them to make a circle. Explain that you will start the music and students will gently toss the ball around until the music stops. The person who’s holding the ball must respond to the prompt that is under their right thumb. Continue the activity until everyone has had a turn. If someone catches the ball twice, tell them to give the ball to  someone who hasn’t had a turn.

Wrap it up: Ask students what they enjoyed about the game and end with: “It’s fun to play the game, and it’s also a chance to see how everyone can find something for which to be grateful!”
