Activity: Teachers create and maintain a “Be Respectful Clip Chart” in the classroom. This is a chart sized paper that is made of sturdy material and displayed in the classroom. The chart is labeled and has room for pinch-styled clothes pins that have students' names on them, one per student. Their choices during the day determine where they fasten their clips. Teachers decide and guide each child during the day, letting them know if the clip needs to go up or down according to the child’s behavior. Moving the clip up is possible when a child exhibits good behavior. The opposite is true when a child exhibits disrespectful behavior, and there may be consequences for that. Each school day begins with all clips in the middle section, which is labeled “ready to learn.” A display with labeled graphics for various respectful behaviors is mounted next to the chart. The teacher can use this to point out which behaviors are being rewarded. The student will be guided by the teacher to move their own clip up or down the chart during the school day. The chart with respectful behaviors can have graphics and words for the following (or whatever the teacher wants): (a) I put things away, (b) I take good care of classroom materials, (c) I help clean up, (d) I use my words (instead of my body)

Directions: Introduce the charts with open-ended questions about being respectful at school, such as “Can you give me an example of what it means to be respectful?” Show the students the two charts and explain how to use them. One by one, give each student a clothespin to put in the middle section of the chart. Tell them that you will let them know when to move their clip up or down on the chart and why, using the behavior graphics chart. Remind them that every morning their clips will go in the middle section, “ready to learn.” Teachers create their own system for consequences. Give students a couple of weeks to get acquainted with using the charts.
Wrap it up: Explain: “These charts will remind us to be respectful here at school. I will let you know when to move your pin up or down. If you have to move your pin down because of a behavior that is disrespectful, don’t worry, because you’ll be given lots of chances to move it up, as soon as you are able to show respectful behavior. Every day you will all start in the middle [ready to learn section], and at the end of the day we will move all the pins back to the middle for the next day.”
