Activity: Students listen to the video about courage, discuss the examples in the hip-hop song, and share examples from their own lives.
Materials needed: the video
Directions: Begin: “Today we will watch a video about courage and talk about some of your own experiences. I want to hear about when you’ve had to be brave about something and when you’ve had to try new things even when you were really nervous.” Show the video and guide a discussion in which students share about examples in the hip-hop song. Encourage students to share about when they’ve needed to have courage and what they did about it. Remind students to never make fun of someone who’s nervous or afraid. What is needed is assistance, someone who can help them with that.
Wrap it up: Explain: “It’s important to try new things now and throughout your life. Courage is like a muscle - our muscles get stronger when we exercise. Courage grows when we fight our fears and nervous feelings, and try something that is difficult. Of course, we need to make good decisions and always ask ourselves questions: is this safe; is this something my parents would want me to do? If we don’t know the answer, we need to ask an adult we trust who really does know.”
