Activity: Students participate in an exercise called Frustration Flip, based on this story.
Materials needed: Drawing paper and writing materials
Directions: Read the story. Review the examples of how to flip a frustration . Pair students. Tell each pair to discuss a typical situation that is frustrating and write it down using this format:
When this happens, I _______________________(describe a real frustration).
I can ______________________________ (flip the frustration).
Students read what they wrote to the rest of the class and the teacher guides them to discuss various ways to flip the frustration that was presented by each pair.
Wrap it up: Congratulate students on flipping their frustrations. Tell them that they will practice this in class during the school year so eventually this becomes easier to do. Being able to adjust one’s thinking when there are difficulties is a valuable tool to keep in your life skills tool kit.
