Open External Resource →
Activity: Students listen to the affirmations video. They learn the lyrics and make up actions to go with the words. Students review the meaning of the word “responsibility”: doing your best to take care of things, yourself, and other people, without complaining, and they discuss the examples of this virtue in their own lives at school, home, and in the community. Optional: students can also enjoy the “Responsibility Song”, learn the melody, and act it out.

Materials needed: the video; space for movement standing up or sitting down - or students can remain at their desks

Directions: Introduce students to the theme of this activity by asking what they do to show that they are responsible at school, at home, and in the community. Remind them that the word “responsibility” means doing your best to take care of things, yourself, and other people, without complaining. Invite students to watch a video about responsibility and participate vocally with the kids who are performing.  After showing the video, brainstorm with students to make up actions that go with the words. After a couple of tries, students should be able to memorize the words and actions, and possibly perform it for an audience.

Wrap it up: Explain that the purpose of this lesson is to help them remember to be responsible, respectful, safe, and to treat others the way they want to be treated. Tell students that this activity will be repeated so they can memorize the words. If possible, on another day, introduce them to the alternative video, which is a fun song that they can learn and act out. When students are observed being responsible and treating others nicely, point it out with a comment like, “I can see that you are becoming responsible - you put all the books back on the shelf!” Use the word frequently so they get used to it and grasp its meaning.
